This unique wooden marionette portrays a classic folkloric devil, a common character in traditional European puppet theater. His green face, sharp features, and pointed ears give him a mischievous look. A notable detail is his asymmetrical legs—one human, one hoofed—enhancing his mystical and supernatural appearance. He wears a dark coat with fur trim and a long cape, emphasizing his dramatic character. With simple control mechanics, this puppet is a wonderful piece of folk art and storytelling heritage.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
Alois Šroif was a Prague-based woodcarver and chaser active in the 1920s and 1930s. He specialized in creating theater puppets and decorative marionettes. One of his notable works was an unpainted marionette of a water spirit, which adorned the office of President T. G. Masaryk. His distinctive style influenced other carvers of the time, such as Adolf Kopp from Příbram. Šroif’s puppets are highly valued for their craftsmanship and artistic quality, making them an important part of Czech puppetry heritage.
